The Shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes covers an area of 52 hectares.
Within the grounds, you will find 22 places of worship and prayer on the site of the Marian apparitions of Lourdes that took place in 1858, during which the young Bernadette Soubirous saw Saint Mary on several occasions, apparitions recognized in 1862 by the Catholic Church.
The sanctuary includes the grotto of Massabielle, the site of the apparitions, the Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, the Basilica of the Rosary, the Basilica of St. Pius X, the banks of the Gave, an esplanade, a meadow, a reception area for the sick, fountains and pools, the church of St. Bernadette, a monumental Stations of the Cross, and a number of service buildings.
The site is famous for the water spring that has gushed from the cave since the apparitions and for the miraculous healings that this water is said to have caused. Millions of pilgrims come here each year to show their devotion to Our Lady of Lourdes, including many sick and handicapped people who are cared for by the Hospitalité Notre-Dame de Lourdes.
