Location History
The Rouennais Boxing Club (B.C.R.) was created in 1952 by Mr. Bernard Emo, medalist of the Legion of Honor for Merit. This street educator, at the origin of specialized prevention in the districts of Rouen, knew how to channel the violence which was growing in the eastern districts of the city. In the process, he created the Association Rouennaise d'Education de la Jeunesse (A.R.E.J.), which for a long time remained inseparable from the B.C.R. and which welcomed athletes in a small room without water or heating, located on rue Sainte Claire, on loan from a local priest, the abbot of Auboeuf.
The club moved in 1960 to a new venue, the barracks on rue Eau de Robec. Boxers are content with a precarious installation, but still gain space. This place, supervised by Mr. Bernard Emo and Mr. Eugène Campion, at the time president of the B.C.R., intervened in several sports fields, ranging from Football to Ping-Pong, passing of course and especially by boxing.
Fifteen years later, in 1975, the boxing club moved to a room offered by the city of Rouen, located on Boulevard Gambetta. In this high sports venue, many champions were born, including 10 French champions, which at the time represented a real tour de force. This was possible thanks to the work of Mr. René Fromont, a former professional boxer and street educator, who invested all his energy in his role as a sports executive. The Rouennais Boxing Club is then declared the second best club in France!
After a few years, the Boulevard Gambetta swimming pool was demolished and the club moved once again to the Saint-Exupéry sports complex, where it would stay for some time.
The year 1982 was the last move of the Rouennais Boxing Club. The B.C.R. put down his gloves in the boxing hall offered by the city of Rouen, Boulevard du Boulingrin, thanks to the support of Mr. Lecanuet and Mr. Blaizot, sports assistant. It was on this occasion that Mr. René Fromont offered the gloves with which he had boxed against Marcel Cerdan (son) in 1967 to Mr. Jean-Pierre Blaizot, to thank him for the loan of this 350 m2 hall. Since that date, the Boxing Club de Boxe has continued to train multiple champions who have themselves become coaches today.
It is Mr. Marc Fromont, former boxer, educator and for several years a technical manager, who today continues to carry on the work of his predecessors and to welcome future boxers in the room of the Boxing Club Rouennais. With the help of its experienced coaching staff, the club hosts an average of 200 licensees per year. While investing in the Youth and Sports Association, the Rouennais Boxing Club continues to promote the noble art of English boxing to Rouen residents of all ages and from all walks of life.
In 2008, the Rouennais Boxing Club received the silver club label.
