General presentation

Situated in a meander of the Boutonne river, the town of Saint-Jean d'Angély has an exceptional heritage: the Royal Abbey, the half-timbered houses, the labyrinthine streets, the numerous private mansions built over the centuries... There are also civil buildings of great architectural quality (town hall, Aliénor-d'Aquitaine municipal hall, court, former alderman's residence, Eden cinema...). Saint-Jean-d'Angély has a train station 10 minutes' walk from the town centre.  The journey by car from Paris to Saint-Jean-d'Angély takes about 3 hours.

Location History
Established in Gallo-Roman times, the town of Saint-Jean d'Angély is a major stop on the Way of Saint James. The foundation of the royal abbey in the 9th century by Pepin of Aquitaine, Charlemagne's grandson, intended to house a relic of St John the Baptist, was at the origin of the development of the medieval town.
