Originally ancient Benedictine abbey founded in the ninth century to house the relic of St. John the Baptist, the Royal Abbey experienced a turbulent history from its foundation to the Revolution. In 1010 the modest monastery gave way to an important abbey which became one of the major stages of the pilgrimage to Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle.Détruite and rebuilt many times, the current abbey, the most remarkable architectural complex of the city of St. Jean d'Angely, is a vast collection of classical style built in the seventeenth century. In the eighteenth century, the rooms are refurbished according to "new tastes" rock and Louis XVI. Although the National French Revolution, the abbey became abandoned college and high school. From the 80s, this set listed building is rehabilitated.
