Location History
Laicized in 1791, the church became the national Panthéon. During the 19th century, its function was either religious, either patriotic, depending on the political regime. Under the 3rd Republic, it was turned into an edifice devoted to the memory of famous men, on the occasion of Victor Hugo's funeral (1885). Only the swinging of the pendulum situated in the centre of the building seems to disrupt the quietness of the vast rooms. The crypta contains the tombs of more than 70 famous french personalities like Voltaire; Rousseau, Malraux, just to name a few.
