Under Louis XIV, the National Stud are created by Colbert to organize an expansion of French horse breeding to ensure sufficient reserves horses of the king's armies. They will be removed in 1790 by the revolution and restored by Napoleon 1st in 1806 for the same purposes in cavalry than its predecessors. The National Stud Saintes is created in 1846 in the Second Empire style.
