The Fondation des Artistes was created in 1976, on the initiative of Bernard Anthonioz, by combining two bequests made to the State: that of Baroness Salomon de Rothschild and that of sisters Jeanne and Madeleine Smith, owners of the two houses at 14 and 16 rue Charles VII in Nogent-sur-Marne. The Foundation, which is recognized as a public utility, aims to support visual artists, and encourage creation and research in this sector. Since its inception, it has been particularly active in the social field, providing housing and accommodation for working and retired artists. In Nogent, in the Smith sisters' home, a retirement home for artists (Maison nationale des artistes) and a contemporary art center (MABA) have been set up.
