Location History
The Maison d'éducation de la Légion d'Honneur in Saint-Denis is a public school managed by the Great Chancellery of the Legion of Honour. The students are girls who are descendants of the decorated by the National Order of the Legion of Honour, the Military Medal and the French National Order of Merit. It receives high school and preparatory class students as a boarding school.
In 1809 Napoleon signed a decree to install the Légion d'Honneur house of education in Saint-Denis Abbey. During the 18th century, the buildings of Saint-Denis Royal Abbey were rebuilt on the same place as the former medieval abbey. Robert de Cotte, who was Louis XIV's architect, drew the plans and built the East aisle and the South gallery which are the oldest parts of the building. Then several architects continued to work on the building, such as Jacques V Gabriel and Ange-Jacques Gabriel. Two round buildings surrounding the main courtyard were erected later by Charles de Wailly. Later on, different buildings were added, such as the building dedicated to music tuition erected in 1895. A classroom building was built in the 80's, and again a new one in 2016.
The buildings and the parc are classified as Monuments historiques since 1927. Several restauration campaigns were recently implemented: between 1990 and 2011 the dormitories were restored ; then in 2014 the Prince’s Room and between 2016 and 2018 the Madrid staircase was restored.
