Le Panier is the oldest district of Marseille. Located in the 2nd arrondissement, le Panier is divided between three administrative districts : Hôtel-de-Ville, Les Grands-Carmes and La Joliette.
Some cultural places are typical and inseparable from the Panier such as La Maison Diamantée, le Pavillon Daviel, l'hôtel de Cabre, l'hôtel Dieu, the Accoules church, la Place de Lenche or la Place des Moulins.
Location History
600 years before Jesus Christ, Massalia was born on the site of the current Panier. If the Greeks chose this place, it's for its privileged position high up and close to the sea. They then settled near the Butte St Laurent, the Greek city then developed in the direction of the Butte des Moulins. On the Place de Lenche was the Agora and on the Butte des Moulins the acropolis dedicated to Athena.
