Located on the hillside, in the sheltered valley of Gorbio a few kilometers from the coast, the terraced garden of Serre de la Madone was created at the beginning of the last century by Lawrence Johnston, a plant enthusiast. Seduced by the climate of the Côte d'Azur which allows him to acclimatize plants brought back from around the world, he decides to create an extraordinary garden around an old Provencal farmhouse that he transforms into a Palazzo.

In 1990 the Serre de la Madone estate was listed as a historical monument and acquired by the Conservatoire du Littoral in 1999.
