General presentation
The Ile de Ré is part of the Charente group of islands. It is located on the west coast of France, in the middle of the Atlantic coastline, off the coast of Charente Maritime. It is reached by a 3 km long bridge. The island partly faces the commercial port of La Rochelle and stretches for about 30 kilometres. Ocean, salt marshes, beaches, dunes and forests form the wild landscape of the Ile de Ré. 10 villages of character are also an integral part of the island. Narrow streets and winding alleys are common to the villages, but each one has a different face and a particular atmosphere: fishing villages, fortifications and seaside resorts share this 80 km2 territory.
