HistoireL'Hôtel-Dieu The origins of the Hotel-Dieu back to the late twelfth century, when the Brotherhood of the Holy Spirit based in Marseille one of its first houses. This is called the hospital of the Holy Spirit then greeted the sick and abandoned children. In 1344, Bernard Garnier, a rich merchant, founded the Hôpital Saint Jacques de Galicia, for women. In 1593, Charles de Cazaulx, First Consul of Marseilles meets Hôpital Saint Jacques de Galicia and of the Holy Spirit Hospital in a single institution which takes the name of Hotel Dieu. The hospital is subsequently subject to regular agrandissement.Le main body of the building projects, as today, was built on the plans of Jacques Hardouin Mansart from 1753. He was subsequently refurbished in 1860-1866 by the architect of Marseille hospitals, Blanchet, who prolonged the left wing of the court, erected pavilions at the ends of both wings and the entire suréleva
