General presentation

The first mention of a mill on this site dates back to between 1139 and 1169, when a deed from Rotrou, Bishop of Évreux, mentions a tanning mill (used for tanning leather) at Les Roches de Brosville. Over the centuries, the mill underwent several changes and was rebuilt in three distinct phases. The oldest part, made of stone with half-timbered elevations, dates from the 15th century. The first recorded sale of the mill was in 1572. The brick section was completed in 1897, and the extensions and current wheel date from 1933. In the 19th century, the mill was used to produce flour. In 1933, a ‘Zuppinger’ type wheel was installed, measuring 3.2 metres wide and 6.5 metres high, equipped with 480 oak blades. This mechanism, which is still in perfect working order, enabled the mill to produce electricity until 1955, with an estimated output of 45,000 watts. After a period of inactivity, the mill underwent a major renovation in 2008, including a complete overhaul of its wheel, which restored it to its former glory.
