Location History
The history of the city begins in the 12th century, with the creation of a seigniory that becomes a royal estate later on in 1274. Philippe de Savoie -i.e. the hero's father of the novel The Princess of Cleves, and Philippe d'Orleans were two of the lords at the head of estate. Nemours was then invaded by 3000 Prussians during the Terrible Year of 1870. The city is spared during World War I but it is occupied during World War II. The historical heritage of the city, the castle, the church and the banks of the Loing starts to be highlighted and protected. As of now, it is a city of 13 000 inhabitants, still deeply rooted in its rural culture.
