Location History
Regarded as a symbol of the city of Nemours, this building is one of the last city castles of the Paris Region. Established in the middle of the 12th century century, the territory of Nemours becomes a duchy only in the 15th century. In 1673, Louis XIV gives the Nemours duchy to his brother Philippe d'Orléans. This is the opportunity to restructurate the building : opening of a new entrance to the castle on the Gautier the First street, aligned with the donjon, new front steps that lead to the first floor of the main building. These works gave to the castle its current appearance. After the Revolution, the city owns the castle. In 1901, a comitee decides to renovate the premises to build a museum there, that is inaugurated in 1903. In 1977, the building is listed historical monument. It is labeled Museum of France after the adoption of a law on January 4th 2002.
