Location History
At the beginning of the 12th century, the site of the Carreau du Temple was the former enclosure of the Templars, head of the French province of the Order of the Temple. During the Revolution, the church was razed and Napoleon demolished the temple tower. A Rotunda was built in 1788 by the architect Pérard de Montreuil. The City of Paris built a covered market between the rue du Temple and the Rotonde. This market, built entirely of wooden framework and composed of four halls, was the work of the architect Jacques Molinos and was a great success. Between the four halls and the Rotonde was a "carreau", an area where a second-hand clothing market operated, which lasted until after the war. As part of the urban renewal process desired by Napoleon III and Prefect Haussmann, the city decided to replace the wooden structure with a metal one, safer in the face of frequent fires, and launched an architectural competition which was won by the architect Jules de Mérindol in 1860. The monumental façade of the market opens onto the rue du Temple. With its metal, glass and brick pavilions, it can accommodate more than 2000 places for vendors.
As the market declined until the end of the Second World War, the City of Paris demolished several buildings to recover the land. In 1982 the only remaining building, the current Carreau du Temple, was listed as a historical monument. It will be rehabilitated by the City of Paris which launched an architectural competition won in 2007 by the studioMilou agency. The new Carreau du Temple was inaugurated in 2014 and became a cultural, event and sports venue.
