Location History
Édouard Lartet's archaeological digs in the Aurignac cave led to the definition of a world-famous prehistoric culture, the Aurignacian. This culture lasts from around 37,000 to 28,000 years BP and corresponds to the beginnings of the Upper Paleolithic in Europe, marked by the arrival of Homo sapiens.
Gallo-Roman remains have also been found, evidence of settlement from the 1st century BC onwards.
The Château Comtal and its restored keep, built atop a rocky spur, dominate the landscape. Built in the 13th century, it bears witness to Aurignac's status as a medieval stronghold, the capital of an important castellany belonging to the Counts of Comminges.
Over the centuries, Aurignac's urban center grew up around its castle within the fortified walls, and today boasts a wealth of architectural treasures, including mansions, half-timbered houses, the porch of the Church of St Pierre aux Liens with its famous twisted columns, the 3 towers featured on Aurignac's coat of arms and many other wonders.
