Napoléon Bonaparte finally decided the fate of the Place de l'Etoile. Crowned with glory after his success at the Battle of Austerlitz, in 1806 he decided to erect a monument dedicated to the Imperial Army in the form of a triumphal arch - as an allusion to his military genius and to Antiquity.
