The abbey of Vauclair was founded with the diocese of Laon (todaySoissons), in XIIe century, the request of the Barthélémy bishop.The fast prosperity of this new Cistercian abbey developed until the medium of XIIIè century. This is why one decided to build a new monastery on a vaster level. All the ruins currently visible in Vauclair belong to this second monastery of XIIIè century.
